Burle Marx was a prolific artist across many media. He produced numerous lithographic prints using the wax pencil and stone plate process. Shown at left with his lifetime friend and professional associate Haru Ono, the two are seen making this series of lithographs. In the background an Artist’s Proof of ‘Mutamba’ can be seen. This series consisted of 6 unique design with 4 or more colors each. Each of the 6 designs were printed in two color palettes making 12 unique prints. (One is sold out and no longer available).
The series was commissioned by two entrepreneurs in 1986 especially to promote in the United States where Roberto was well known as a landscape architect but lesser known as a fine artist. Six of the artist’s original paintings were hand selected as guides for the lithograph series. Shown at right are the paintings for which ‘Stravazavia’ (upper and lower left), ‘Florestela’ (upper right) and ‘Pauliceia’ (lower right). At far right, Roberto is seen signing the ‘Carnivalia’ prints in his landscape architectural office in Rio de Janeiro, May 1986.
Each print is limited to 50 prints per edition plus 12 Artist’s Proofs. Each print is numbered on the left (for example. ‘11/50’), is titled in pencil in the bottom middle and is signed and dated by the artist on the bottom right hand side. The prints never left the United States after being brought here. They are sold unframed and are shipped flat and insured. The paper measures 22” x 29.75” and the image (including signature) measures 18" x 25".
The detail in the prints is stunning, the colors Brazilian bold and the hand of the artist still visible. The prints have been in storage since Roberto’s death in 1994 and are in pristine condition.
